Rovers made the relatively short journey to Cleethorpes, ready to face newly promoted Cleethorpes Town at the Bradley Community Stadium.
Match Action – First Half
Doncaster Rovers began the first period with a side that included one trialist, Amari Morgan Smith, formerly of Luton Town.
Rovers started brightly, passing the ball with ease. CHRIS BROWN scored the opener after only 6 minutes. Kyle Bennett beat much of the Cleethorpes defense before firing wide, where Brown was on hand to tap in from close range.
The game settled down from this point while Smith, Syers and Cotterill shone in their first appearance in a Rovers’ shirt.
Cleethorpes played well against the highest placed team to visit the Bradley Stadium, yet failed to find the target and it was then Rovers who entered the break with the lead.

Match Action – Second Half
A much altered Rovers side began the second half, although the back four remained the same. Greg McDermott began the half as another trialist.
Rovers picked up the tempo in the second period and soon doubled their advantage. Cleethorpes’ Phil Cawley handled in the area before JORDAN BALL stepped up to slot home the spot kick.
Rovers brought on assistant manager Brian Carey to play in defense and help keep the hosts at bay. James Husband was forced to leave the field with cramp with 9 minutes remaining, replaced by manager Dean Saunders.
It was SAUNDERS who grabbed Donny’s third in the closing stages. Jordan Ball pulled the ball back for the ‘gaffer’ to tap home from close range. And Rovers soon made it four when clever wing play resulted in JORDAN BALL snatching his second of the game.
It looked to be heading to a 4-0 victory for Rovers before Cleethorpes began pressing. A well timed cross was headed in by Rovers’ defender Liam Wakefield before a piece of fantastic football from the hosts resulted in Hanslip scoring Town’s second.
Despite being a friendly, Cleethorpes’ Marc Sawyer was ordered off the field.
All in all a good day for Doncaster Rovers in their first friendly of the year, they were given a good test by Cleethorpes at their lovely home.
