PRE-SEASON REPORT: Rotherham United (A)

Rotherham welcomed Rovers to their new home for their first pre-season in Rotherham for 4 years.

Rovers have not faced Rotherham since 2007, when they were 3-2 victors at the brand new Keepmoat. Goals from Paul Heffernan (2) and Graeme Lee secured the victory despite goals from Martin Woods and Richie Partridge for the visitors.

Match Action – First Half

Doncaster Rovers and Rotherham United both played in alternative kits to their usual home strips. Rotherham wore a yellow shirt with a black band across the chest while Rovers wore a green shirt with a white ‘V’ across the chest.

There is not a lot to report on for the first half at the New York Stadium. Both sides failed to convert their chances despite having plenty. Rovers’ best chance came after a low cross was sent in from the left flank by Bennett, but David Syers failed to convert despite sliding in at the far post.

Rotherham’s best opportunity came in a spell of less than a minute when they were pounding the Rovers goal. Gary Woods was on exceptional form and managed to save almost every shot during this frantic spell before Liam Wakefield got a clearance away.

First Half – Line Up

Gary Woods (GK), James O’Connor, Liam Wakefield, Tommy Spurr, James Husband, David Cotterill, David Syers, Paul Keegan, Robbie Blake, Kyle Bennett, Chris Brown.

Match Action – Second Half

Rotherham had the first chance of the half when Alex Revell managed to loop the ball over Maxted, only to watch his shot go agonisingly wide of the post.

They were made to rue their missed chances after 54 minutes when DAVID COTTERILL struck a curling shot from long range, beating Andy Warrington in the Rotherham goal.

Following several changes by the ‘Millers’ soon after the goal lifted the spirits of the home side, and they were soon level. MARK BRADLEY sprinted down the right wing, putting the ball through the legs of James Husband before firing home past Maxted.

The hosts soon took the lead through an almost identical goal, this time from trialist KIERAN AGARD. His thumping effort went through the legs of Maxted to make the scores 2-1 after 70 minutes.

Second Half – Line Up

Jonathan Maxted, Martin Woods, Liam Wakefield, Tommy Spurr, James Husband, Robbie Blake, Brian Stock, Paul Keegan, DAVID COTTERILL, Kyle Bennett (Amari Morgan-Smith, 69), Chris Brown.
