The Mariners welcomed Rovers to Blundell Park for a second year in their pre-season schedule. After beating Cleethorpes in Grimsby by 4-2, Rovers were hoping to continue their positive run by beating Grimsby in Cleethorpes!
Match Action – First Half
Doncaster Rovers used no trialists in their first half against Grimsby, but their line up was made of new signings and former youth players, as well as the regular squad.
Rovers started brightly, passing the ball around and creating chances with ease. A couple of early efforts went wide but it didn’t take long for a breakthrough.
David Cotterill sent in a low cross to the far post where DAVID SYERS was on hand to head in from close range. A deserved early lead for Rovers.
Rovers were further ahead 6 minutes later. This time a nice piece of play from Kyle Bennett found David Cotterill in the area. Cotterill was hacked down in a clumsy tackle resulting in a penalty kick. CHRIS BROWN took the opportunity and beat the keeper with ease.
The game settled down for a short period following the second goal, allowing Grimsby the opportunity to shoot. Despite this, they failed to test Gary Woods and Rovers retained their lead.
Rovers struck again in the 28th minute, again from the spot. This time Coppinger found Chris Brown who, while readying to shoot, was tackled from behind. This time DAVID COTTERILL stepped up to score Donny’s third.
The sides went into half time with Rovers running away with the first half.

Match Action – Second Half
Rovers definitely had a tougher time in the second half. Gary Woods’ mistake let in a Grimsby striker to score, only for his back heeled strike to be ruled out as offside. It wasn’t long until the Mariners grabbed a goal.
In the 68th minute, Soares’ cross was headed past Woods by SOUTHWELL. Around 5 minutes later Grimsby were closer to levelling the scores. SOUTHWELL took advantage of another fumble from Gary Woods and a poor piece of Rovers defending.
The League One side were being outplayed by the non-league home side. Jordan Ball came close for Rovers but the score remained as 3-2, much to the relief of the players and Donny faithful.
Second Half – Line Up
Gary Woods, James O’Connor, Liam Wakefield, George Friend, Tommy Spurr, James Coppinger, Martin Woods, Brian Stock, Amari Morgan Smith, Chris Brown, Robbie Blake, Jordan Ball, Greg McDermott, Jake McCormick.
